A Message from the "R"

Joyful Hearts

When I was a very young child I accepted Jesus into my heart the day I heard the pastor read these words. “And Jesus said, “Let the little children come unto me, and do not hinder them, for to them belongs the Kingdom of God.” Matthew 19:14 He wanted ME, just a plain, and ordinary little kid who lived on a farm. This is the verse on the back of my work shirt, and it brings me great JOY.

As children we find JOY in the smallest things: a rose in bloom, a ladybug climbing on a stick, the circles a pebble makes when dropped in water. Then, somewhere on the way to adulthood, our JOY sometimes wanes or evaporates in the desert of difficulties.

More than any other experience I’ve had on my faith journey, my Emmaus experience rekindled the JOY I had as a child who accepted Jesus into her heart. Along the way to adulthood my JOY in Jesus didn’t evaporate, but at times it became stagnant.

Then, through Emmaus, “all things become new”, and, once again, I viewed the world through a child’s eyes. Excitedly, I experienced again the inexpressible and glorious JOY that only Jesus can bring to our hearts.

God’s JOY isn’t based on our circumstances; rather, its roots begin with the seed of God’s Word planted in our hearts. Sometimes these are words we heard as children, sometimes not until we became adults. Our hearts spill over with JOY knowing that God loves and forgives us and that He is in complete control of our lives.

People asked me, “What will the theme of the weekend be?” I answered, “I don’t know, but it’s going to have JOY in it.” “JOY”, that was the word. Did you know that there are 242 verses in the NIV bible with the word JOY? David loved using Joy to describe his feelings about God; “ my heart leaps for joy”, “you fill me with joy”, “I sacrifice with shouts of joy”, “come let us sing with joy”. I certainly can relate to David’s emotions. But in Romans, in one of Paul’s letters, I read the verse, “Then, by the will of God, I will be able to come to you with a joyful heart, and we will be an encouragement to each other.” I thought this verse describes our road to Emmaus. Coming together by the will of God, having JOY, and encouraging one another.

Paul knew about obstacles. On our journey to Emmaus 152 we have encountered several obstacles. But, by the will of God, the Team of E-152 will go to the mountain with joyful hearts, and our new sisters in Christ will join us. Many of them may have faced obstacles or their JOY may have waned, but we will come together, with the JOY of Jesus in our hearts, and we will be an encouragement to each other. DeColores
